Q: What is the application cycle for AMVETS National Scholarships?

A: The AMVETS National scholarships application process will begin on January 20th through April 30th annually. Note: No application will be reviewed until after May 1st. Recipients of all scholarships will be notified by AMVETS National Headquarters’ Programs Department during the third week of June and announced publicly during the fourth week.

A: No.

Q: Can child/grandchild of a Veteran, Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserved apply?

A: Yes! If they meet the eligibility requirements.

Q: I am the spouse of a Veteran. Am I eligible to apply?

A: Yes! If you meet the eligibility requirements.

Q: I don’t know where to find my Veteran’s discharge papers! What do I do?

A: You can request copies of your Veteran’s discharge papers at https://www.archives.gov/.

Q: My Veteran is deceased; can I still apply?

A: Yes! If you meet the eligibility requirements and have the proper documentation as proof.

Q: When will the scholarship funds be awarded?

A: The funds from all scholarships are disbursed directly to the school after the recipient completes the required documentation and returns to AMVETS National Headquarters’ Programs Department to be processed.

Q: What is the basis of selection for the AMVETS National Scholarships?

Q: Could I use my scholarship fund for advanced academic degrees beyond my undergrads?

A: No. Currently there are no scholarships for graduate level courses.

Note: If you have successfully completed your undergrad courses with an AMVETS Scholarship, and have funding remaining it may be used towards your advanced academic degree.

Q: Do I have to attend a traditional school, or could I attend an online school?

A: No, you do not have to be limited to a traditional school. The scholarship fund will be applied to any school that falls within our guidelines as an accredited four (4) year institution.

FAQs – Current AMVETS Scholarship Recipients

Q: What do I need to do in order to qualify for renewal of the annual awards?

Q: How often are the scholarship funds paid out?

A: AMVETS will make one payment per academic year, even if the student is on an accelerated schedule.

Q: How long do I have to use the funds?

A: You are required to use the scholarship in its entirety within five years of the award date.

The JROTC scholarship must be used within one year of the award date.

Q: Will I have access to any unused funds?

A: Any amount not used within the specified period will be forfeited.

Q: If I transfer schools, will my funds still be available to use at the new school?

A: Yes, if the school is an accredited college or university, and there is funding available.

Q: What happens to the funds if I am unable to finish the term?

A: Based on the school’s refund policy, any unused funds can be returned to AMVETS.

Note: If you return to school before the funds expire you may submit the Certification of Registration form to AMVETS for approval.

Q: How will my personal information be used?

A: In the spirit of The Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C. & 552A, as amended, protecting your privacy is vital to AMVETS, and we will use the personal information provided for the sole purpose of evaluating your scholarship application. It will not be shared, sold, or otherwise made available to any individual, corporation, or organization. Disclosure is voluntary.
