AMVETS 2010 Symposium for 21st Century Veterans
Galt House
Louisville, Kentucky
Monday, August 9 to Wednesday, August 11, 2010
Overview:
Prior to the 66th AMVETS National Convention, AMVETS will bring more than 100 veterans of the 21st Century to discuss issues unique to today’s veterans’ community. The 2010 symposium will follow up on the 2006 AMVETS National Symposium for the Needs of Young Veterans, which generated a comprehensive report to guide AMVETS in meeting the needs of the nation’s newest veterans.
The 2010 symposium will focus on three major categories: Reintegration, Health Care and Benefits. Each category will be divided into breakout sessions, where small groups of veterans will have the opportunity to discuss issues such as suicide-prevention, employment, women’s health care delivery, and G.I. Bill benefit implementation.
Significant progress has been made since the 2006 symposium, and the 2010 symposium will document where progress has been made, identify continued shortfalls, and discuss developing issues.
Agenda:
The symposium delegation will gather on August 9, introducing all participants to the key issues. A keynote speaker will also address the delegation on the significance of the day’s work.
Following the opening session, major category groups will gather to discuss reintegration, health care and benefits before adjourning to individual breakout sessions to discuss individual issues.
On day two, each major category will reconstitute to compile their findings on the individual issues. The afternoon will be spent compiling a final report, which will be presented to the AMVETS National Convention delegation during the convention’s opening ceremonies on Wednesday, August 11.
Cost:
AMVETS posts and departments from around the country will be asked to sponsor participants, providing transportation and associated room costs for a three-night stay in Louisville. AMVETS National Headquarters estimates that the average cost to sponsor a veteran for the three-day symposium should not exceed $900, which includes round-trip airfare, single-room occupancy for three nights and associated meal per diem. The cost to sponsor veterans from nearby AMVETS departments, such as Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan and Tennessee, may be significantly less, considering travel options. The cost to sponsor veterans in shared rooms can also significantly reduce sponsorship costs.
