ONE FEWER SOLDIER MISSING IN ACTION
DoD identifies remains of Staff Sgt. Maupin
WASHINGTON, March 31, 2008—Nearly four years ago, Army Staff Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin was captured on the streets of Baghdad. In the years that have followed, Maupin’s family has pleaded for their son’s safe return. On Sunday night, their worst fears were confirmed when the military identified remains found in Baghdad as the remains of their son.
Staff Sgt. Maupin was the first U.S. service members to be listed as “Missing in Action” in Iraq. This morning, the Department of Defense officially changed his status to deceased. He was taken captive in April 2004 along with Army Sgt. Elmer Krause when insurgents attacked their convoy near Baghdad International Airport.
Maupin’s captors forced him to appear in a video one week later, which was broadcast by Al-Jazeera. Two weeks later, Krause’s body was found.
The safe return of Maupin’s remains brings closure to a grieving family. The thoughts and prayers of AMVETS are with Carolyn and Keith Maupin.
As an advocate for prisoners of war and those missing in action, AMVETS remains committed to the safe return of all those sworn to defend this nation.
Three U.S. soldiers remain “missing in action” in Iraq: Spc. Alex Jimenez, Pvt. Brian Fouty, and Spc. Ahmed Altaie. AMVETS urges the departments of State and Defense to renew their commitment to returning all those missing in action to the United States with the dignity and honor that they have earned.
