AMVETS REMEMBERS SEPT. 11, 2001
AMVETS National Headquarters and AMVETS around the country gather to remember those who lost their lives and those who continue to serve.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 14, 2009— AMVETS National Headquarters hosted a somber memorial service in honor of the brave Americans who lost their lives in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and all American service members who have answered the call to serve in the wake of the horrific events that took place eight years ago at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pa.
AMVETS National Finance Director Velma Hart opened with a prayer and invited headquarters staff to join in a moment of silence at 8:46—the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center.
AMVETS National Commander Duane Miskulin also delivered remarks, reminding staff that it is the duty of AMVETS to protect those who have served this nation in its hour of need and to preserve the tenets of freedom and the ideals of Americanism.
AMVETS National Membership Director Phillip Ledwell closed the ceremony with a benediction in which he encouraged the assembled AMVETS staff to work together to serve the needs of our nation’s veterans as we move forward from this day of service and remembrance. The ceremony closed with God Bless America.
At AMVETS posts around the country, veterans gathered for their own ceremonies in remembrance of those who perished in the tragic Sept. 11 attacks. AMVETS also hosted various events over the weekend to continue honoring the innocent victims, first responders and men and women in uniform who lost their lives protecting their fellow man and defending freedom over the last eight years.
