Qualifications: The EHS Operations supporting Gas Operations in the Manhattan division is seeking to hire a highly motivated Senior Specialist. The ideal candidate for this dynamic position must demonstrate a high energy level, understand the vital importance of commitment to excellence and possess a high regard for Con Edison’s Corporate Values, Mission Statement and The Way We Work Principles. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with the public, regulators, and various levels of management and union personnel. The candidate must be able to exercise independent judgment and render sound business decisions. The candidate must be well organized, detail oriented, flexible to handle multiple assignments, and meet project deadlines. The candidate must also possess strong oral and written communication skills and be committed to provide exemplary customer service. The candidate must be able to evaluate, prioritize and respond to rapidly changing conditions. In order to qualify for this position, the candidate must have a: Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science or Biological Science and three years of relevant work experience; or a Bachelor’s Degree in a non-technical field and a minimum of five years of relevant work experience; or an Associate’s Degree in a technical discipline and five years of relevant work experience; or a High School Diploma with seven years of relevant work experience and/ or classes or certifications in the EH&S field. The selected candidate must be committed to delivering excellence in the area of EH&S performance. The individual must work well in teams to help achieve the goals of the organization. They must promote the vital importance of personal accountability and positive work ethic in support of the Company’s Corporate Values. The individual must also possess proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Working knowledge of the Company’s software systems such as SHIMS, EMIS, and APTS is preferred. Knowledge of Gas, Steam or Electric Operations is a plus. Responsibilities: The Senior Specialist develops and maintains expertise in EH&S matters pertinent to Gas Operations and provides advice and counsel to all levels of the organization. The candidate will be a recognized safety leader, responsible for developing and promoting the use of human performance tools to help achieve a zero accident culture and operational excellence. The candidate will: initiate and disseminate effective and timely communications on EH&S issues to all levels of the organization; develop and implement plans to protect employees and contractors, the public, and the environment from potential physical and chemical hazards associated with Company operations and activities; maintain subject matter expertise on EH&S topics and deliver training/presentations to Company employees as needed; conduct and oversee field inspections of Company and contractor crews; conduct post-incident reviews and root cause analyses to identify corrective and preventive actions; monitor field groups’ documentation including permits, licenses, certificates, reports and records so that they are maintained and accessible as required by regulations or Company procedures; assist the organization in obtaining environmental permits as required; develop EH&S-related performance standards and goals in conjunction with the field groups; monitor progress towards attaining goals and reports status to all levels of the organization; provide EH&S field support during emergency incidents including 2-hour response coverage on the 24/7 emergency duty schedule; serve on various committees and communicate relevant information to the organization in a timely manner; support compliance with relevant EH&S regulations; develop and implement work practice improvements; develop safety strategies to drive safety performance to meet the organization’s KPI’s; conduct periodic self-assessments to predict and prevent non-compliance; assume delegation of authority for section manager as required; and may perform other related assignments as required to support EH&S efforts. Knowledge in the following areas is preferred: Job Safety Analyses, Hazard Assessments, Work Area Protection, PPE, Accident and Injury investigations; SARA Title III; NYC Fire Department Right to Know laws; Lead and Asbestos regulations; Lockout/Tagout; Company EH&S policies, procedures and manuals; excavation and scaffold safety, fall protection; electrical enclosed and confined spaces; Federal, State and local EH&S regulations.

Physical Requirements: Candidate must have a valid driver’s license. Candidate must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed. Candidate must be able to work in all types of weather and off-hours as needed. Candidate must be physically able to wear a respirator and work in difficult environments (heat, noise and confined spaces). Position requires extensive walking.
