Qualifications: Government Relations seeks a talented and dynamic professional to become an integral member of the Government Relations and Corporate Affairs team. The successful candidate will have all or most of the following qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience. • Degrees in public policy, law, business, political science, environmental sciences, engineering or other relevant disciplines. • A mix of experience working on government relations, legislative matters and energy and security policy issues. • Knowledge of and familiarity with trends in the electric and gas utility industries, as well as energy and environmental policy and regulation. • Knowledge of or experience in/with, Congress, relevant federal agencies/departments/commissions (Energy, Homeland Security, Defense, Environmental Protection, FEMA, FERC), and industry trade associations (EEI & AGA). • Excellent anticipatory and organization skills, including the ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and prioritize demands. • Strong written communications skills, including attention to details and deadlines when composing reports and proofreading materials. • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, including excellent oral communications, customer-orientation, and sound judgment demonstrated by a professional manner in dealing with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally. • Comfort with an independent and entrepreneurial work environment. • Ability for frequent out-of-town travel Responsibilities: A successful Section Manager for Government Relations serves as the company’s key point of contact with federal government officials , including senators and house members, congressional staff, department and agency staff, and advocacy groups, to convey legislative goals and policy positions that impact the company. Monitors, analyzes and prioritizes emergency legislative issues and policy matters affecting the company’s and its business units; consults with middle and senior level management across the organization to determine the impact on customers, business practices, operational costs and efficiencies. Creates and executes innovative advocacy strategies to favorably influence legislation and policy initiatives; educates public officials and staff; holds meetings with the company experts; and participates in industry lobbying activities; assists in certain grass roots advocacy programs. Serve as liaison between the company’s subject matter expect and the Corporate Affairs Department on federal government related issues. Drafts legislation that the company may want introduced in congress, facilitating the enactment and passage of certain bills, rules/regulations that are favorable to the economic and competitive interests of the company, customers, and employees. Represent the organization at industry and
political events, industry briefings and association and coalition meetings. Assist in the development, maintenance and growth of the Con Edison Inc. Employee Political Action Committee (CEIPAC). Assist the Director of Government Relations, Vice President of Government Relations, and Sr. Vice President of Corporate Affairs in preparation of responses to legislators, committees and agencies as needed. Serve as emergency responder and participates in all aspects of Corporate Affairs responsibilities during emergency and assist in preparation of emergency preparedness information. Will perform in such special assignments as directed by the Director and/or Vice President of Government Relations. Perform other tasks and assigned as required. The selected candidate will operate as an integral member of the Government Relations and Corporate Affairs team. You will maintain a professional and integral relationship with elected and appointed officials of the executive and legislative branches of the state government and various state agencies; advances a legislative and policy agenda that protects the interests of the Company and its customers; and, serves as the Government Relations day-to-day point of contact with certain industry trade associations in Albany, NY. It is expected that the selected candidate will reside and work in Albany, NY in a furnished office, and will be provided the administrative support to be successful. As such, the successful selected candidate will be comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy and integrity.
Physical Requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed. Must be able to participate in the Company’s emergency management processes and storm plan as required. Position will be based in Washington D.C. with frequent travel to NYC & Albany.
