AMVETS National Headquarters, Dec. 1, 2018 – American Veterans today is grieved to learn of the passing last night of one of its own, President George Herbert Walker Bush.

“He served his country as a Congressman, an ambassador to the United Nations, as director of the CIA, as vice president, and ultimately, as president of the United States. But before all that, George Herbert Walker Bush was a Naval aviator who flew 58 combat missions in the Pacific theater of World War II,” said American Veterans National Commander Rege Riley. “He was one of us, an American Veteran through and through, and a recipient of our highest award for service to his fellow veterans, the Silver Helmet. AMVETS has long been proud to count him as one of its own, and we join together today with all of our fellow veterans to mourn his passing, to celebrate his life, and to honor his legacy of service to our nation.”

AMVETS is the nation’s most inclusive Congressionally-chartered veterans service organization. It is open to and fights for all veterans who served honorably, including reservists & guardsmen. AMVETS has been a nonpartisan advocate for veterans and their families for more than 70 years. amvets.org
